The Romero Center has been established to demonstrate, advocate and educate the public, government leaders and opinion makers, that there is a strong connection between the broad and historical tenets of Catholic Social Teaching (CST) and the traditions of progressive social democracy.
This is important for two reasons.
First, many people, Catholic and non-Catholic alike, believe that the teachings of the Church are laser focused on one issue only, that being the right to life of the unborn. In fact, CST is much broader, incorporating many valuable ideals that support social and economic justice and which are consistent with the political beliefs of progressives.
Second, the belief by many that the Church only cares about right to life issues, has resulted in many younger, progressive Catholics turning their backs on their faith.
Conversely, many traditional Catholics do not fully understand how broad Catholic Social Teaching is and how many of the progressive ideas promoted by CST do and should align with their faith.
We believe that a better understanding of the things that bind us, rather than separate us, will lead to important social and economic change and growth.
